Over 42% of people in sub-Saharan Africa are living below the poverty line meaning their income is $1.90 or less per day. Over 70% of jobs are classed as vulnerable. This means that workers can have limited access to social protection schemes, are often faced with low and highly volatile earnings and may be forced to work in unsafe conditions.
Alive and Kicking is the world’s only not-for-profit ball manufacturer. Their centres across sub-Saharan Africa create hundreds of ethical jobs for adults facing disadvantage. Profits from balls sales and additional fundraising give young people access to sport and health education through Alive and Kicking ball donations and the delivery of effective sport-based health programmes. Yunus Social Business supports Alive and Kicking’s operations in Kenya, where they are the sole local manufacturer of leather balls in the country!
A+K Donates 10% of the balls it makes. Since 2004, their donations have given access to play to 700,000 children. The business currently employs 64 employees with potential to reach 150 employees in the next 3 years. They are an inclusive employer, offering opportunities to employees with disabilities.
