In India, population growth and urban migration demands for a solid waste management system. However, there is a significant lack of awareness around the benefits of appropriate waste segregation and disposal. Municipal services often lack in efficiency and a majority of waste is filled in landfills without proper segregation or recycling.
Hasiru Dala Innovations (HDI) leverages a decentralized waste picker model, optimizing the collection of source segregated waste from bulk generators such as residential complexes, corporate campuses and restaurants and the consequent sub-segregation of dry waste into plastics, glass, paper, metal, and other waste. HDI engages and promotes Waste Micro-Entrepreneurs, who are responsible for collecting and segregating waste while reducing the waste being dumped in the landfills.
To date, HDI has created predictable livelihoods for 299 waste pickers and 25 waste micro-entrepreneurs, who historically belong to oppressed communities.
