Of the 80 million tons of residential waste produced per year in Brazil, almost half is organic waste. Less than 1% of this organic waste is composted. This organic waste going to landfills causes the proliferation of disease vectors (mosquitoes, rats, etc.), soil and water contamination, and the release of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane).
Morada da Floresta works to reduce individuals’ environmental footprints and reduce waste sent to landfills. Since 2009, the social business has been producing and selling home-composting bins, modern cloth diapers, and sustainable period solutions.
Morada da Floresta has already produced enough composting bins to avoid 47.5 tons per day of organic waste sent to landfills. Through sales of its other sustainable products, it has also prevented 5 million menstrual pads and 11.4 million baby diapers from being disposed of into the environment.
